Water Conditioning Contractor Insurance in California

Water conditioning contractors work inside homes and businesses, connecting to the water supply. A small mistake can mean a large water damage claim. We place C-55 contractors with coverage for the leaks and service calls that come with the work.

What the C-55 license covers

The CSLB’s definition

“A water conditioning contractor installs water conditioning equipment with the use of only such pipe and fittings as are necessary to connect the water conditioning equipment to the water supply system and to by-pass all those parts of the water supply system within the premises from which conditioned water is to be excluded.”

The common C-55 claim is water damage: a fitting that lets go, a bypass that floods a garage, or a softener leak that soaks a floor before anyone notices. That is the completed-operations part of general liability. Your service vans carry equipment and salt every day, and many installers also rent or lease units to customers.

What California requires of a C-55 licensee

Common questions

C-55 coverage, answered

What is the workers’ comp class code for water treatment contractors in California?
Household water softening, conditioning or filtration systems are code 9519, with a 2026 WCIRB advisory rate of $6.23 per $100 of payroll. Industrial water treatment systems are rated as millwright work, code 3724 ($4.24).
Is general liability required for a C-55 license?
Only for LLC licensees, which must carry at least $1 million. Sole proprietors and corporations aren’t required to by the CSLB, but most general contractors and public agencies will require it before you start.
Does my insurance cover a leak from a softener I installed?
Damage to the customer’s home from a leak after the job is usually covered by the completed-operations part of general liability, as long as the policy was in force and has no water-damage exclusion that applies.
Do water conditioning contractors need workers’ comp with no employees?
Not yet. A C-55 licensee with no employees can file the CSLB exemption until January 1, 2028, when the exemption ends for every classification. Any employee means you need a policy now.
