The CSLB’s definition
“A sign contractor fabricates, installs, and erects electrical signs, including the wiring of such electrical signs, and non-electrical signs, including but not limited to: post or pole supported signs, signs attached to structures, painted wall signs, and modifications to existing signs.”
Falls from lifts and ladders and crane work drive the comp rate. On the liability side, a sign that falls onto a car or pedestrian is the claim everyone fears, along with striking power lines and damaging the building during install. Crane and bucket truck work also needs its own coverage for the equipment and anything it lifts.
The C-45 coverage stack
- General Liability — completed operations for signs that must stay up for years
- Workers’ Compensation — 9552, 5146, 4492 or 9507 depending on the work
- Commercial Auto — bucket trucks, boom trucks and trailers
- Inland Marine — cranes, lifts, and signs in transit or awaiting install
- CSLB license bond — the $25,000 bond every C-45 license needs
- Excess & Umbrella — national retail and freeway sign contracts often require more
