The CSLB’s definition
“A sheet metal contractor selects, cuts, shapes, fabricates and installs sheet metal such as cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, pans, kitchen equipment, duct work (including insulation, patented chimneys, metal flues, metal roofing systems and any other installations requiring sheet metal).”
Cuts, falls from roofs and ladders, and lifting are the comp claims. On the liability side, flashing, gutter and metal roof work is water-intrusion work, and leaks are the claim that follows it. Some policies treat metal roofing as roofing and exclude or surcharge it, so tell the underwriter what share of your work is on roofs.
The C-43 coverage stack
- General Liability — disclose metal roofing and flashing so leaks are covered
- Workers’ Compensation — rated 5538 or 5542 depending on each worker’s hourly wage
- Commercial Auto — trucks hauling coil, duct and ladders
- Inland Marine — brakes, shears, roll formers and field tools
- CSLB license bond — the $25,000 bond every C-43 license needs
- Excess & Umbrella — commercial mechanical contracts often require more
